Itinerary for the Hoverla and Petros trek
day1
Ivano-Frankivsk – Kvasy
The group gathers at the train station in Ivano-Frankivsk. There, everyone gets acquainted, and the instructor distributes the group gear and trail food. After that, we head to the village of Kvasy, famous for its mineral springs of sour water. We'll dedicate this day to acclimatizing our bodies to the unusual mountain conditions. We'll take a short hike to the nearest mountains. After covering about 3 km, we'll set up camp. It's important to rest well and gather strength, as our trek begins tomorrow.
day2
Kvasy – Sheshul Pass
The first full hiking day of our route. After breakfast, we'll head towards Petros. The deciduous forest gradually turns into coniferous, as we gain elevation. Suddenly, dense thickets of delicious blueberries appear around us. We won't be able to resist such temptation, so we'll treat ourselves to nature's forest gifts. We won't reach the summit of Mount Petros today, but will stop near the Sheshul Pass. The campsite is densely overgrown with huge burdock leaves, so hikers commonly call it "Burdocks." From here, we'll have an amazing view of the Carpathian Mountains. We'll enjoy the sunset, have dinner, and go to sleep.
day3
Sheshul Pass – Petros – Chernychna Mountain Camp
A wonderful morning in the Carpathian Mountains! Rare clouds hang in the numerous mountain valleys, timid sunbeams shyly break through the mountains behind our backs, illuminating the milky mist beneath our feet. Such silent splendor takes your breath away! We are in the shadow of Sheshul Pass. It's quite cool here, the duty team is preparing breakfast while the rest quickly pack up the camp. After a hearty breakfast, we confidently set off to conquer Petros. A short climb along the Chornohora ridge – and we're at the summit. We take photos and admire the beautiful views that open up before us. We unhurriedly begin the technically challenging descent. On the way down, we watch our step carefully and don't rush. Closer to the edge of the coniferous forest, we'll set up camp. A wonderful blueberry meadow with plenty of berries awaits us again, so let's not waste any time.
day4
Ascent of Hoverla (2061 m)
Today we'll meet the main goal of our hike – Mount Hoverla – and ascend the highest peak of Ukraine. Hoverla is also the most popular peak. Hundreds of tourists from Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Russia and many other countries climb it every day. The height is 2061 m. The mountain offers unmatched panoramas of the Carpathians. After long contemplation of the neighboring peaks and a photo session, we'll begin the descent to our camp. There, a delicious dinner and cheerful songs with a guitar await us.
day5
Chernychna Mountain Camp – Kozmeshchyk Shelter
Petros and Hoverla are behind us now – it's time to descend to civilization. We'll walk past a pasture and shepherds along a forest trail to the Kozmeshchyk shelter. Time flies very fast in good company, and before we know it, we'll be stopping at the shelter. We'll spend the night on the bank of the mountain river Lazeshchyna. If desired, part of the group can thoroughly comb through the surrounding forests in search of delicious porcini mushrooms. If the foragers are lucky, a tasty porridge or mushroom soup will await us for dinner.
day6
Kozmeshchyk Shelter – Lazeshchyna Village
Our hike is coming to an end. Of course, we want to stay as long as possible in this place, where time flows quite differently. But we need to return to the city. We pack up camp and head to Lazeshchyna village, and from there – on to Ivano-Frankivsk. If desired, part of the group can stay in the Carpathians and continue their active vacation.

Changes to the Program
Depending on weather conditions, the condition and general wishes of the group, the team leader has the right to make changes to the route.
Weather Conditions
The Carpathians are a quite rainy region. So you should be prepared for anything – be sure to bring a raincoat! There can also often be strong winds on the ridge. Depending on the weather, it can be both hot and cool during the day. Most campsites are at high altitude, and even on summer evenings and nights it can be cool – don't forget to bring a hat and gloves!
Required Documents
To participate in the hike, you must not have any illnesses incompatible with active tourism: the list is here.
Required Gear
Friends, this gear list is focused on summer time, when it's relatively warm in the mountains. If you're heading out on a hike in spring or autumn, ask your consultant for advice. You'll most likely need more warm items.
If this is your first hike, we recommend borrowing gear from friends or renting it from our rental shop in Ivano-Frankivsk. After the hike, you'll realize that the mountains are your new hobby. And after talking with the team leader and more experienced participants, you'll learn a lot about gear and be able to choose equipment that better fits your own needs.
The team leader has the right to deny you participation in the program if your gear doesn't meet the recommendations on the site. For example, if instead of mountain boots you brought sneakers or rubber boots.
Please be as responsible as possible when gathering your gear. Not only your health depends on it, but also the comfortable completion of the route by the group as a whole!
When packing your backpack, put all your items in plastic bags (or dry bags) – this will protect them from getting wet in case of heavy rain or snow.
Pack your sleeping bag and all warm items (especially down ones) with maximum care. If they stay dry, they'll keep you warm and happy, even in less than ideal weather.
Tent – must be double-layered (inner tent and outer fly), fly waterproofing more than 2000 mm, floor – more than 5000 mm (preferably 10,000). If you're bringing your own tent, be sure to send a photo or model name to the trip consultant, and they'll tell you if it's suitable. Don't bring fishing tents or Chinese single-layer tents on the hike! Read: "How to choose a tent for a mountain hike"
Sleeping mat – a regular foam mat like the Izhevsk type will do just fine. But don't bring a thin yoga mat! Article: "All about sleeping mats"
Trekking poles – they'll take the load off your knees and provide extra support
Rain cover for the backpack. If you're bringing a poncho, you don't need a rain cover.
Raincoat or poncho. The raincoat should be made of thick polyethylene; if you have doubts about its durability, bring two, as raincoats sometimes tear. You can bring a poncho (a rain cover that goes over you and your backpack together) – it replaces the raincoat + rain cover combo.
Seat pad – a foam pad for your bottom, to keep you warm and dry when sitting during breaks and at camp
Light headwear – cap, sun hat, buff
Multifunctional headband (buff) – you should have at least one. Can be used both as headwear and to protect the neck and ears from the sun.
Hat – even in summer, evenings in the mountains are chilly
Membrane jacket – to protect from wind and rain. As a last resort, a windbreaker will do.
Membrane pants – bring them if you have light single-layer ones. If not, you can do without.
Fleece. You can bring a sweatshirt, but it's heavier.
Light long-sleeve shirt or synthetic raglan – to protect from sun and dry quickly
2–3 t-shirts. Synthetic is better for hiking, cotton for camp.
Trekking pants for hiking – light and quick-drying
Shorts
Socks – 4–5 pairs, ideally trekking socks, but regular ones work too
Underwear – several sets
A set of passive thermal underwear or a raglan with long johns for sleeping
Clean t-shirt and shorts/pants – for the trip back home
Swimsuit
A light dress – for beautiful photos #dressonahike
High trekking boots with a thick ribbed sole, ideally waterproof. As a last resort, good trekking sneakers will do, but they don't support the ankle – you need to be more careful. There's no need to bring heavy trekking boots. Read: "All about choosing trekking boots" and "How to choose trekking sneakers"
Light sneakers, crocs, or sandals – a second pair of shoes for walking around camp
Mug, spoon, bowl, knife. Dishware – never ceramic.
Sunglasses
Sunscreen (preferably SPF 50)
Lip balm (men should bring it too)
Headlamp
1.5-liter water bottle. A regular mineral water bottle works fine.
Hygiene items – soap, shampoo (in a small bottle), toothpaste, toilet paper
Snacks – nuts, crackers, or sweets. Don't bring too much, we feed you well!)
Towel – preferably microfiber. Light and compact.
Tech – mobile phone, power bank, camera
Documents and money – pack them carefully in a waterproof bag
Frequently asked questions about the Hoverla and Petros hike
When should I buy tickets?
As always, we recommend buying tickets in advance, although often there are still seats available on trains even a week before the hike starts. Buy your ticket there so you arrive at the Ivano-Frankivsk railway station by 10 a.m. on the day the hike starts. A slight delay is acceptable. For the return trip, buy a ticket for the evening, preferably between 8 and 10 p.m., so you'll have time to walk around Ivano-Frankivsk. You should only buy tickets after we've confirmed your participation in the hike, which you can do at the ticket counters at the railway station or online on the Ukrzaliznytsia website.
Group meeting
The group meeting point is the waiting hall of the Ivano-Frankivsk railway station. The time is set based on the last arriving participant, usually 10 a.m. About 5–7 days before the hike, we'll send you the exact meeting time and the team leader's contacts by email. Don't forget to check your inbox!
Climate features
Bring raincoats and warm clothing. The weather in the Carpathians is very changeable, so you need to prepare in advance for its surprises. First, remember that rain is not uncommon here – be sure to bring a raincoat and a rain cover for your backpack. Second, evenings, especially at high-altitude campsites, can be chilly. Bring a hat, gloves, and a jacket.
Trip menu
You're probably wondering what we'll eat on the trek? We'll say right away that there's no need to worry. Many participants say that they eat better on the trek than at home. The menu is based on simple food – porridges and soups. Don't expect fancy delicacies (although there may be some).
If there are certain foods you don't eat, be sure to let your consultant know so the team leader can slightly adjust the menu for you. We also recommend bringing some pocket snacks – nuts or sweets. Appetite on the trek is much better than at home.
Please note that the menu shown is approximate. Team leaders usually have their own signature dishes that they love to treat participants with.
Meal features for vegetarians – if you don't eat meat, be sure to read this. We explain how we'll feed you and give a 5% discount on your own products.

You can dream about anything, but dreaming about mountains is something special! I dreamed, no, I even raved about the winter Carpathians, so I planned a trip there for two long years and it just never worked out. This year too I was hanging by a thread from fulfilling my dream... For a long time I couldn't choose the best company, I was nervous that I'd go and sleep and eat with people unfamiliar to me, but the mountains... the mountains were calling me, so I waved away all my doubts, called, booked a spot, and the next day I was already buying a ticket to Ivano-Frankivsk and starting to pack. Everything I wanted to take, I forgot half of it, but thanks to Kuluar's manager Anna, who gave me a list of necessary things... good thing I packed everything according to it and didn't lose my mind from happiness. Upon arrival a transfer and the other group members were already waiting for me. So we're driving... it's quiet in the car, barely anyone talking. I got sad, thinking, well that's it, it's over, the trip is ruined... but the mountains, they're so great!!! My mood went up again, a smile on my face!!! We arrived in Lazeshchyna, where we were settled in a cozy house with very welcoming hosts who also fed us. By the way, I had the best view from my window, onto Hoverla and Petros. Yes yes, I'm a lucky one. After settling in and eating, we went for a walk along snow-covered forest paths, through a snowy forest. It was a real forest fairy tale, exactly as I imagined it from childhood. While walking we got to know each other better, and it became more and more fun. The next day was an early rise and the ascent of Hoverla. The weather was clear... how lucky we were with it, when we were there you could see all the majestic Carpathians (the Chornohora and Marmarosy ridges), Petros the handsome one. Photos, tea, coffee and back to base by evening... While we were descending, everyone had already gotten to know each other and we were like friends. After descending the mountain we came back to Lazeshchyna, where a delicious dinner and a banya were waiting for us. You can go to a banya in the city too, but it's just not the same as it was there! And our guide showed us how to really steam yourself... Andriy steamed everyone to glory) On the third day, we were warned about the weather conditions, but there were some daredevils who decided to try anyway. Another early rise, a hearty breakfast and off we go! Half the group and an experienced guide went with us. We met the dawn already at the beginning of the ascent to Petros, the weather conditions were worsening by the minute... it felt like the wind was about to blow us away and carry us back to the banya, saying, sit here and don't move until the end of the trip... and then when only 200 meters of elevation gain remained to the summit, our guide says, that's it guys and girls, we need to turn back, or there will be trouble! I had long dreamed of climbing Petros in winter, and I was very upset that the weather conditions were deteriorating, but I'm very grateful that Andriy was with us, who turned us back, since it was all extreme and it was unknown how all our wishes could have ended... After descending to the koliba, we lit a fire, sat down to warm up and drink tea, share impressions from the climb and sing songs, and planned to head back. In the evening a delicious dinner and banya were waiting for us again. That day already felt like I was resting with friends. It was so easy and interesting to talk with everyone. This was my first commercial hike together with Kuluar - hikes in the mountains of the world, but not my first time in the mountains. I was amazed at how fun and actively you can spend the weekend, as it seemed with completely unfamiliar people... how much you can eat and drink (I'm talking about Carpathian tea) how fun the guides can be and how funny the stories are. I want to say to those who want to spend time having fun and actively, I recommend spending it together with Kuluar, and if your guides are Vova Vasylyshyn and Andrzej Pylypiuk, then they will do everything possible so that you get maximum enjoyment from the hike. However there is a very important thing! A hike should be chosen according to your physical capabilities and mental preparation, so if you don't know what a winter mountain hike is, or generally what a hike is at all... you may end up disappointed.
The best hike with the best team! Huge thanks to «Kuluar», as well as to our wonderful guide and the incredible girl Maryna for the vivid emotions and unforgettable journey!!! We conquered Hoverla and got the chance to enjoy the amazing views of Ukraine! Of course, we're not saying goodbye, just see you somewhere out there. The most valuable thing you can give is emotions, and we got enough of them to share with others and stay energized for a long time! I will miss our cheerful team, where everyone is a hero and a winner! Thank you to every participant for the warm, family atmosphere, smiles and jokes, for the support and great mood! YOU ARE AWESOME!!! And I also want to give special thanks to Myroslav for his hospitality and delicious lunches! Hugs to everyone 🤗 Until our next meeting! Your vitamin B1
