You can climb Petros at any time of the year. In summer, this mountain is chosen for rejuvenation and a sense of unity with the region's nature, while gathering mushrooms, berries, and admiring the incredible views of Chornohora. At the top, you'll be greeted with a marvelous panorama of mountain ranges with steep slopes stretching from Hoverla to Pip Ivan Chernohirsky. In winter, you step into a true fairy tale, surrounded by abundant snow, bright sunshine, crystal-clear air, and deep blue skies. The snow-covered spruces and endless expanses reveal an array of hues of white, green, and blue.
The ascent to the top is achievable for both experienced mountaineers and beginer tourists under the guidance of a team leader. It's essential to have the necessary equipment and prepare routes and options for overnight stays in shelters or tents, which we will further discuss in this article.
Still wondering how to get to Petros? The Team Leaders of Kuruar club, who know the Carpathian trails perfectly and have hiked them many times, prefer the route from Lazeshchyna. From the village we travel to the Kozmeshchyk tract, and then through the Holovcheska meadow to Petros. Travel time is approximately 8 hours there and 7 hours back. The path will lead you to the foot of the mountain, and then more than 2 kilometers of steep ascent to the top. If you choose this route, you will come across several shelters along the way where you can spend the night. There are paid and free shelters, as well as many places on the lawns and in the forests where you set up camps. The advantage of the route from Kozmieszczyk is that you can reach Petros radially without heavy backpacks.
How to get to Lazeshchyna? There are two main options: by train or by bus. First, we go to Rakhiv, then take a suburban bus to the village. This route is perfect for travelers planning to drive their own car. If you plan to travel by train, they run from Lviv, Kyiv, and Ivano-Frankivsk, as well as electric trains from Uzhhorod and Mukachevo.
From Lazeshchyna, the trail leads through a river, forest, and a steep ascent. When you reach the top, you will see a restored cross, chapel ruins, and a stone pyramid 1.5 meters high symbolizing the peak of the mountain.

From here, breathtaking panoramic views unfold – encompassing all of the Carpathians, including the Marmarosy, Chornohora, and Svydovets, as well as the Romanian Carpathians when the weather is clear. It's an incredible opportunity to enjoy the boundless beauty of the mountains and Ukrainian nature and capture lots of photos that will take your breath away.
The most popular and picturesque ascent to Mount Petros is the route from the village of Kvasy. The distance is about 32 km and it can be done comfortably in 2 days. If you are short on time and have a great desire to climb to the top, you can do it in 1 day, if you have excellent physical fitness. The route is as follows: Kvasy village - Dzhordzheva Prelukha meadow - Menchul meadow - Biostationary camp of Lviv Ivan Franko National University- mt. Petros - Kvasy village. The route from Kvasy is longer, but more interesting due to the easy ascent, and you can taste mineral water at the start. And there are quite a few springs with water along the route, and places to spend the night in tents near them.

Starting from the village of Yasinia, head north along the mountain trails. The road can have several options, depending on your level of experience and preferences. The main path is marked in blue. The length of the path is 12.5 km to the top and has the steepest ascent. It is best to walk here in spring, when all of Chornohora is still snow-covered, and the Kukul meadow is adorned with thousands of crocuses. This incredible sight is worth seeing at least once in a lifetime.

Also, be sure to check the weather on Mount Petros, for example, on mountain-forecast or other specialized websites. Clear, dry, and low-wind days are best for climbing, as rain, fog, and strong winds might hinder your ascent.

Important! Summer and winter Petros are, without exaggeration, different locations that differ in complexity and scenery. Deep snow hides the trail and slows you down, wind and frost can lead to frostbite and other troubles. The risk of injury increases significantly. And avalanches pose the greatest danger in the Carpathians. At the same time, climbing a mountain in winter is often accompanied by icy slopes, so climbing crampons will not be superfluous, and it may be necessary to walk in crampons, which is why beginners are better off storming the peak with experienced team leaders.
Prepare a route and remember about the necessary equipment before going. And don't worry, climbing in winter is quite possible - proven by satisfied tourists and the Kuluar team!
