Egypt is one of the most popular and accessible tourist countries, and the Sinai Peninsula with its clear Red Sea waters and many hotels in Sharm el-Sheikh is one of the centers of Egyptian tourism. But few people know that in Sinai, near the resort of Dahab, there is a beautiful area for rock climbing and mountaineering!
The Sinai granite peaks near the Bedouin village of Santa Catarina have been mastered by European climbers for more than 40 years, and despite the unique beauty of the terrain and the local flavor, they are not yet overcrowded with visiting climbers. Here you have the opportunity to practice on rock climbing "punched" routes and get used to the local granite, and then make several climbs to the big peaks of the area.
In addition, the Santa Catarina area is a place rich in history and an opportunity to turn vacation days into a fascinating excursion. Here is the oldest monastery of St. Catherine, as well as Mount Moses. According to tradition, it was here that Moses received the tablets with the Ten Commandments.
The program is suitable for beginners who have just started climbing and want to get better acquainted with rock climbing, as well as for those who already have experience and want to visit a new area for themselves. There are routes to suit all tastes and level of training. After the climbing you can stay on the beaches of Dahab and go scuba diving, windsurfing or kitesurfing.

Selecting airfare, gear and accommodation options in Dahab

On the outskirts of Dahab, in the so-called Camel Canyon, there is a wonderful rock training area called Wadi Gnai with a lot of climbing routes. We will take a rented transfer from our hotel to Wadi Gnai. We are going to climb the local granite, get used to the terrain, work out different rope routs, practice working with belaying. In the evening we go back to the hotel.
Today we leave early by shuttle to the Bedouin village of Santa Catarina. As the guide decides and depending on the condition of the group, there are two options for the day today. We can climb an interesting warm-up multi-pitch on the sandstone mountain Mileges on the way to Santa Catarina. Or directly in the area of the village we will make the first real climbing of one of the nearby peaks (most likely Mt. Farah). In the evening rest in the guest house, dinner, preparation for the next ascent.
Early rise today. We set off again to meet the Sinai granites. We will go on one of the longer and more difficult routes of the area (Mount Batta, Rabba or Safsafa). Passing time is usually about 5-7 hours, the daylight hours are short, so tune in to a whole day of interesting climbing and gain new experiences. After the passage of the descent into the village. After the rocks and two days of climbing, it's time for a little rest. Today you can just stay in Santa Catarina and enjoy the local cuisine, you can go on an excursion to St. Catherine Monastery (built in the 6th century), and the most active can go trekking to Mount Moses early in the morning and meet the sunrise there. In the evening we prepare for the final ascent. Overnight at the guest house.
Up before dawn and out to the trailhead. Today we are waiting for the next portion of granite corners and fireplaces! As a rule, on this day, well rested in the previous day, the group goes on a long or difficult route of the area, because before leaving home we want to put out as much as possible. After a day of climbing, having completed the route, we go down to the village and take a well-deserved rest in Dahab. Depending on the wishes of the group we can stay in Santa Catarina and move to Dahab the next day.
Back at our hotel to the sea, you can relax on the beach or go scuba diving and other activities, of which there are plenty. In the evening, a celebratory dinner to celebrate the end of our trip.
If the group wishes we can stay in Santa Catarina for one more day and do one more short route, and only in the evening return to Dahab.
Today we leave the hotel for Sharm el Sheikh airport and go home. Our journey is over!

Weather conditions are one of the most important factors for a successful ascent. Fortunately, winter in the Sinai mountains is not harsh. Daytime temperatures can reach over 20 degrees, but it can also be very windy, so a good set of wind- and sun-protective clothing will come in handy. But in the evening, morning and night at this time of year it can be really cold, so a warm jacket, hat and gloves for the early climbs and approaches are a must!
