Insurance, like a first aid kit, is good if you never have to use it. But if you do, it can save your money, health, or even life.
For example, let's take statistics from trekking in Nepal. Here, for 200+ participants, we have 2-3 helicopter evacuations annually, which is about 1%. And in recent seasons, there have been more evacuations due to covid or some other infection. There are no problems with helicopters in Nepal, only with their cost. Evacuation costs 2-3-5000 dollars, plus the most basic medical expenses will cost another 500 dollars or more. If you have the right insurance, it will cover all the costs (sometimes there is a deductible for transportation costs, but it is 10-20% of the amount - not so critical).
Having insurance can save you thousands of dollars. Moreover, we do not allow you to participate in our programs without insurance.
Insurance requirements for hiking in the mountains
What you should pay attention to:
- Your insurance must cover from 30,000 euros
- Be sure to check the box "active tourism" or "mountain trekking", and in case of climbing - "mountaineering"
- Covers medical and transportation costs, including helicopter evacuation. This is primarily relevant for high-altitude programs
Tip: take out a policy a couple of days longer than the planned stay. There may be situations when an insured event occurs in the last days of a hike, and you need to be in the hospital for a week. Then you'll have to pay extra out of pocket, and it's expensive.
