Berries of the Carpathians: when they ripen and where to pick blackberries, bilberries, raspberries and more

The Carpathians are a real berry paradise. Starting in July, the mountain slopes and meadows burst into all the colors of summer: fragrant wild strawberries, honey-sweet raspberries, deep-blue blueberries (also called yafyny), juicy blackberries, and dozens of other wild delights. In high mountain clearings they form endless carpets, and every berry picked in the quiet of the mountains is a little capsule of vitamins and living energy from nature.

Hikes and treks in the Carpathians with the KULUAR club will definitely give you the chance to visit the most amazing places, where the berries taste richest, and the days are filled with sunshine, the fragrance of herbs, and the music of mountain streams.

How to pick and eat berries safely in the mountains

True vitamin pleasure requires a few rules so that the tasting is not only enjoyable but also safe:

  • Wash your hands before eating. In the mountains, you can use clean spring water or wet wipes/sanitizer.
  • Don’t pick berries near roads or settlements. They may contain dust, dirt, and harmful substances.
  • Eat only the berries you know well. If you’re not sure—don’t risk it and always consult your trip leader. In the Carpathians there are poisonous berries that look like edible ones: Baneberry – black, shiny berries that resemble blueberries or bilberries, but grow in clusters on a thick stalk. Herb Paris – a single large black berry in the middle of four leaves, may look like a big blueberry. Wolf berries/daphne mezereum – small, bright red berries resembling lingonberries or rose hips.
  • Don’t pick berries in protected areas where it’s forbidden. Respect nature conservation rules.
  • Don’t overeat, even the tastiest ones. A large amount can cause stomach upset, especially after physical exertion on a hike.
  • Pay attention to the cleanliness of the place. Don’t take berries near garbage, livestock grazing areas, or tourist camps.
  • Always check before eating. Avoid damaged, moldy, or rotten berries.

By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the taste of Carpathian berries safely and with maximum health benefits.

Calendar: when Carpathian berries ripen

The Carpathians delight travelers with berries almost all summer and even into autumn. The higher you go, the later the fruits ripen — but their flavor becomes more intense. So when planning a trip, you can use these approximate ripening times to catch your favorite berry season.

Main wild berries of the Carpathians: blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, lingonberry

Among the wide variety of Carpathian berries, the ones that bring travelers the most joy are blueberries, blackberries, wild raspberries, and lingonberries. Let’s take a closer look at when these treats ripen, where they grow, and on which KULUAR routes you can find them most often.

Bilberry (yafyna, afyna) – the queen of the Carpathians

What does a bilberry look like? This berry is a small black pearl of summer, offering a burst of sweet taste and the rich aroma of the mountain forest. It easily stains your fingers purple, and in your mouth it melts with a juicy tartness that brings you back to childhood and the happiest moments.

What’s the benefit of bilberries? And what’s the difference between bilberries and the highly promoted blueberries? Blueberries are larger, lighter inside, and don’t stain. Bilberries contain more antioxidants (especially anthocyanins), so they better support vision and blood vessels. Bilberries have more vitamin C and fiber, a milder flavor, and less acidity.

If we compare by “usefulness,” blueberries lead in antioxidants, but both are very valuable for health. Can you make tea from blueberry leaves, and how? Definitely! To prepare this “balm,” pour 200 ml of boiling water over 1 tablespoon of dried leaves (or 2 tablespoons fresh), steep for 10–15 minutes, strain, and voilà — a treat in your cup.

In the Carpathians, bilberries grow everywhere — on clearings, in pine forests, on meadows, even along trails. In July–August, during the ripening season, the mountains come alive with berry happiness. Almost every KULUAR route will give you not only the chance to hike but also to taste real summer, picking blueberries straight from the bush.

Blackberry

Blackberries are a true explosion of healthy flavor in the Carpathians! In August, they ripen on sunny slopes, forest edges, and dense thickets, where you can pick them right along the trail. The berry is sweet, with a refreshing tartness, juicy and incredibly fragrant. And the tea from its leaves is simply wonderful!

Wild blackberries and their leaves are rich in vitamins C and K, and also contain powerful antioxidants that help recharge your body and keep you energized even after long routes.

The KULUAR club often takes hikers exactly where blackberries grow best — such as on routes through the Skole Beskids and the rocky slopes of the Gorgany. Picking blackberries in the wild is like capturing a piece of summer and leaving its warm trace in your memory.

Wild raspberry

Wild raspberries are like sweet rubies hidden in a green sea of mountains. Their red, tempting, aromatic berries will surely bring you unforgettable pleasure on a hike. They grow on forest edges, among shrubs, and on mountain slopes, often near trails.

What’s the benefit of raspberries? They’re not only rich in vitamin C but also contain antioxidants and natural antibacterial substances. These berries help strengthen the immune system, improve heart function, and normalize metabolism. They’re also known for their calming properties and support for skin health.

To pick them without harming the plant, carefully take only ripe berries without damaging the shoots. This allows the plant to keep bearing fruit and delight travelers.

KULUAR organizes hikes where raspberries are no rarity. For example, on the Wild Trails of Gorgany route you can enjoy their taste among mountain landscapes. Other equally amazing spots are Kolochava and Synevyr, the Hike to Shpytsi and Rebra via Nesamovyte Lake with tents, Where Cedars Grow – the Legends of Fairytale Gorgany, and the Chornohora Ridge Trek.

Lingonberry – the red pearl of the Carpathians

Bright red with a light tartness — lingonberries are hard to confuse with blueberries, because instead of dark-blue juice they leave only a gentle pinkish shade on your fingers. Unlike cranberries, lingonberries are smaller and have a sweeter taste without sharp bitterness.

The best place to find them is on sunny high-mountain meadows, among dwarf pine and heather — where the ground is warm and the air is filled with mountain freshness.

Other wild berries of the Carpathians

The Carpathians are a true treasure trove not only of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and lingonberries, but also a colorful necklace of other amazing berries that bring joy and health. Already in June, wild strawberries ripen on sunny clearings and cozy forest edges — an early beauty of summer with a delicate aroma and sweet flavor that enchants from the very first berry. In September–October it’s time to pick bright red rose hips — their fruits are a real vitamin boost, warming and healing, filling the soul with warmth.

Dark-purple elderberries ripen in August–September, not only adorning summer but also becoming the basis for fragrant teas and sweet jams — their taste reminds of home comfort and mountain magic. Rowan berries — bright orange, tart-sweet fruits that ripen in autumn — add vivid colors to compotes and jams, giving a unique aroma and energy. And currants — black, red, or white — grow on forest edges and in shrubs, ripening in summer, bringing strong immune support with their vitamins and antioxidants.

Recipe for Carpathian berry jam in a cauldron

Gather the juiciest Carpathian berries — blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, lingonberries. Gently rinse and cover them with sugar at about 700 g per 1 kg of berries. Let them sit so they release their rich juice and aroma. Then slowly cook in a cauldron, stirring with love and patience, until the jam thickens and fills with the taste of summer in the mountains.

Pour this sweet magic into jars — and let every spoonful bring warmth, the aroma of adventures, and memories of incredible journeys with KULUAR in the Carpathians, even on the coldest days. Enjoy!

And if you’re going for Carpathian berries—go with KULUAR!
