During our camper tour through Iceland we will visit places where important historical and cultural events described in Icelandic sagas took place. We will see many thousands of years of glaciers, dormant (and maybe not so dormant) volcanoes, vast lava fields that are scattered all over the island. As well as icy ocean beaches, sheer cliffs, glaciers, hot springs and picturesque mountains that attract visitors from all over the world with their amazing beauty.
Iceland is the best place to see the northern lights - dancing colorful bursts of light in the sky, shimmering with bright lights.
According to ancient Icelandic legends, the northern lights appear when the elves on earth dance and cheer. Smiles will also be on our faces at the sight of no, not the elves, but the northern lights.
The elusiveness of this phenomenon and the ethereal beauty of Icelandic nature will make our camper tour exciting, romantic and even venturesome.
All travels along the route in comfortable motorhomes - new places, adventures, experience. And what could be better than doing it in a motorhome! In a short time we will explore the entire southern coast of the island!
We set dates when the daylight hours are not too short to be able to see Iceland in the daytime sun. And at night, if we're lucky, we can enjoy the unforgettable spectacle of the northern lights!
We will have the opportunity to soak in real hot springs, which is a pleasure! At the beginning of the trip, we will visit the hot springs that are located off the road. And at the end of the trip, we will visit the famous Blue Lagoon.
Iceland's winter waterfalls are fascinating: ice cascades surrounded by snowy landscapes create a unique atmosphere!

Today we arrive in Keflavik, the country's main airport and the gateway to the fascinating and rugged world of island adventure. From there we move to Reykjavik, the capital of the island nation. We'll have plenty of time to get to know this stylish and beautiful city. Did you know that Reykjavik is the largest city in Iceland, with almost a third of the island's population - that's a little over 120,000 people.
We'll walk through the central streets and cozy squares of the historic city center, a beautiful example of Scandinavian architecture.
This day's program includes a visit to Tingitlir National Park, which is located in a valley formed by a rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Here you can walk between continents and practically be in Europe and America at the same time. Tinguetlir National Park is a unique place also in historical terms - the oldest parliament in Western Europe - Althing - was regularly held here for eight centuries, starting from the middle of the 10th century. Also here in 1000 Christianity was accepted, and here in 1944 Iceland declared its independence from Denmark.
Our introduction to the island will continue with a visit to the famous Höykadalur Valley - the "Valley of Geysers" where the world famous Geysir is located, which gave its name to all the fountain springs on the planet. Geysir stays dormant most of the time, and rarely does it delight tourists with grandiose jets of water. But its neighbor Strokkur manages to shoot several 20-meter jets every two to six minutes.
The waterfall of Gudlfoss, a multilevel "golden waterfall" with the total height of 32 meters, completes the Golden Circle of Iceland. Gudlfoss is one of the most beautiful, full-flowing and large waterfalls in Iceland.
We will drive 234 km in one day.
Overnight stay: Selfoss campsite
We continue our camper tour and head to Iceland's most popular waterfall, Seljalandsfoss. This is an incredibly beautiful waterfall that you can walk around and take photos from the back side of the stream. In winter, this opportunity depends on the weather, perhaps icing will prevent you from doing so.
Nearby is the Glyufrafoss waterfall, which is hidden behind a giant rock. To see the waterfall up close, you need to get into a small picturesque gorge.
After the adventure on the falls is nice to lie down and relax in the cozy thermal pool Secret lagoon, the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It opened as early as 1891. Lying in the mineral water with a temperature of 38-40°C you will feel the true Icelandic atmosphere.
After the bath we will go to Skaugafoss waterfall, a place where you can take great pictures, especially in winter when the northern lights dance in the sky above the waterfall.
At the top of the waterfall is a staircase of 370 steps, and when the weather is nice you can enjoy a view of the southern coast of Iceland.
In one day we will drive 164km.
Overnight camping Skogar
Next we explore the town of Vic, where we see the famous beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
Here is one of the most beautiful places on the planet - the black volcanic beach of Reinisfjara with huge basalt columns, which go straight into the sea. A few dozens of meters from the shore there are rocks of bizarre shape - Reinisdrangar or - Troll's Fingers. Legend has it that these are frozen trolls, which the sun's rays have turned them into stone.
From the black beach of Reinisfjar we have a good view of the southernmost point of Iceland - Dirhoulay Cape with a beautiful stone arch on the shore. We will walk to the cape, walk by the white lighthouse of the same name and enjoy the view of the waters of the endless Atlantic Ocean.
We will drive 100 km in one day.
Overnight camping Skaftatetl
Today we will go on a short trek to one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the planet, Svartifoss, surrounded by black basalt columns.
These monumental columns have inspired many architects from Iceland to create beautiful projects that have become true masterpieces of classical architecture - the National Theater and Hatlgrimskirkja in Reykjavik.
After visiting the waterfall, we'll look into a little-known place where, according to local beliefs, gnomes live. The Dwarf Rocks or Dvergamrar are hexagonal columns of basalt in the shape of a horseshoe. Many Icelanders still believe that gnomes live in these rocks, so Dvergamrar is treated with great respect-just in case.
In the afternoon we head to the easternmost point of the trip, where we stop at a lookout point near one of the most stunning places in the entire world - the largest glacial lagoon, Jokulsarlon, which spreads out at the foot of the Vatnajokull Glacier. One hundred years ago the edge of the glacier was 200 meters from the sea. Today, however, the glacier is intensively melting actively increasing the area of the water surface of the reservoir. Blue and white icebergs slowly drift from the clear waters of the lagoon directly into the ocean, where the current carries them to the black Diamond Beach. Big and small ice blocks "diamonds" sparkle brightly in the sunlight. You can wander and look at the pieces of ice of bizarre shapes endlessly.
We will drive 233 km in one day.
Overnight stop at the parking near the lagoon. There is not equipped place, there are only toilets. If we want we can go back to the previous campsite.
Today on our camper tour of Iceland we will see Hofskirkja. This beautiful and original church is made of peat and is located right by the ring road, near the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. Its central part was built in 1884 - it is the last church in Iceland built in the "peat style". Our route takes us to Skaftafedl National Park. We will see the Svinafældlesjökull glacier, the tongue of Vatnajökull the largest glacier in Europe. It is one of the most popular places in the country for glacier walks. Not only travelers appreciated the beauty of local nature, but also movie producers. Some episodes of Game of Thrones were filmed here.
After the glacier we go to the unusual canyon Fjadrarljufur. The name of this place is simply impossible to pronounce, but it is definitely worth a visit.
From the hiking trail offers a stunning view of a fairly deep - 100 meters - winding two-kilometer canyon.
We will drive 171 km in one day.
Overnight stay at Hveragerdi Camping
In the morning we head to the largest geothermal area in the country, the Reykjadalur Valley. On a snow-covered hiking trail, weather permitting, we will ascend to a hot river shrouded in a white blanket of steamy clouds.
In the valley, boiling thermal waters mix with icy river water to create hot baths in which we are sure to bask to our heart's content.
In the afternoon we will visit the Reykjanes Peninsula which is near Reykjavik. There are several mountain volcanic systems, geothermal springs and the incredibly beautiful Lake Kleifarvatn, one of the deepest lakes in Iceland (97m).
Also today we will visit the volcano Fagradalsfjall, which began erupting in the spring of 2021 and has been erupting for six months. Although the eruption is over, you will be able to see up close the result of volcanic activity - new lava fields and craters.
Before returning to Reykjavik those who wish can visit the famous Blue Lagoon - a large lake and geothermal resort with an ideal temperature for bathing (39°C on average). Just imagine: blue water, snowy hills and northern lights.
We return to Reykjavik, where we stay overnight in a cozy hostel.
In one day we will drive 372 km
Today is the last day of our trip to Iceland.
The remaining time before departure we will devote to a walk in Reykjavik. It's a relatively small city that you can get around in a day. The best way to get to know the Icelandic capital is to start with a walk through the shopping street Leygavegur. Here there are many stores and souvenir shops, where you can buy the famous sweaters "lopapeisa" and other things made of lopi sheep yarn. Do not miss the main attractions of the city - the expressionist church building Hatlgrimskirkja. Check out Harp's concert hall, the National Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Whale Museum of Iceland or the Reykjavik Museum of the Northern Lights. The city is full of picturesque architecture and plenty of street art. And you're also sure to meet one of the local cats - there are plenty of them in downtown Reykjavik.

Ukrainian citizens who have biometric passports don't need a visa to visit Iceland. At the border crossing, you may be asked to present an insurance policy.

If you go on this tour in winter, you should consider the weather. Winter in Iceland is warm, temperatures rarely fall below minus 5. But there will be strong winds, because of which the temperature can reach minus 15. So take warm clothes, raincoats.
During the program, we sleep in a campervan on the campsites, where there are hot showers and toilets. Below is a photo of the campervan:
Keflavik Airport is located 55 km from Reykjavik, about 45 minutes away.
All these buses stop near the main large hotels in the center. There is also a pickup option. From the BSÍ Bus Terminal, you can be transferred to a smaller bus and taken to other agreed stops (including the campsite). This is sometimes for an additional fee and should be specified.

You need good insurance to participate in the program. Please do not neglect this point. It has saved some participants thousands of dollars. Our insurance guidelines can be found here: "Insurance for Kuluar Hikers".
Of course, it's not cheap, but it's still worth a meal in an Icelandic restaurant. You should order the national dishes, especially the seafood and the famous lamb steaks. Of course, we can fry up the latter on our own for a farewell dinner. If you're sure of your stomach, try the rotten shark meat.
Icelandic ice cream is incredibly delicious and great! Once you try it, you can't stop. It's the same at all the dressings, buy the middle one in milk chocolate.
In Iceland, the currency is the krona. You won't be able to buy anything for euros or dollars almost anywhere, except in large souvenir shops in the center of Reykjavik and at a not very favorable rate. You can pay with a card absolutely everywhere.
But it's worth keeping some cash (coins), because in some campsites they pay for showers. 2 thousand kronor will be enough. Just withdraw a few kronor from an ATM, buy a bun in a supermarket, and ask for the rest in coins.
Icelandic is the only language spoken in Iceland. But the Icelanders are very friendly and speak English well, and all signs and plaques are duplicated in English, so you don't have to worry about the language barrier. You don't have to ask your interlocutor if it's okay to speak English, because almost everyone understands it.
Our team leader, Anna Petrauskene, bought her sweater here - Icewear. The sweater cost 23000 ISK. The store gives you a receipt, and at the airport you can fill in the information to get a tax refund. There are more expensive and cheaper sweaters, they are sold everywhere. It is worth paying attention to whether it is made of original Icelandic wool or just natural wool, but not authentic. This affects the price.
