Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains beckon tourists with their grandeur and mesmerizing beauty. Clean and fragrant local air is just a bliss. And the green slopes with curly pines and, at first glance, impregnable peaks, wrapped in fluffy clouds, will not leave anyone indifferent. And describing the beauty of the Carpathians, it would be unfair of us to forget about the local mountain lakes with crystal clear water, in which the blue boundless sky admires his reflection.
In total, about 30 lakes are hidden among the Carpathian mountains at an altitude of 1,400-1,800 meters. And despite their modest size, they are very revered by locals, attributed to them many legends and affectionately called “sea eyes”.
The most high-mountain lake of the Carpathians – Lake Brebeneskul, is located on the Chernogorsky ridge on the slope of Gutin-Tomnatic at an altitude of 1801 meters above sea level. The stony, steep shores give it a kind of harshness and inaccessibility. But the heavenly azure and clear cool crystal water attracts tourists to the lake at any time of the year.
High in the Carpathian mountains (1750 meters above sea level) on the slopes of Mount Turkul Lake Nesamovyte lake. Only hikers (that’s us! =) can get to it. The depth of the lake is only 1-1.5 meters. Nesamovitoe lake has found a cozy spot in a beautiful flowering valley, on one side of which the earth is covered with downy Alpine pines and on the other side unapproachable rocks. There is a belief that if you wash your face with water from the lake, you will definitely find your happiness in the coming year. Another legend says that in Nesamovitom there are the souls of suicides. And if someone throws a stone into the water, then a thunderstorm will catch him on the way, because these souls fill their bags with ice and turn into black clouds, which then sprinkle travelers with hail. The most popular hikes in the Carpathian Mountains go through these two lakes.
The largest mountain lake in the Carpathians is Lake Synevyr. It was formed at an altitude of 989 m above sea level by a landslide that covered the river valley on the southern slopes of the Gorgany Ridge. Its area is 7 hectares, and its depth reaches 24 meters! The lake is the main advantage of the national park Synevyr, where every year a lot of tourists come to admire the amazing scenery and beauty of local nature.
Another very unusual and fascinating lake is located in the nature reserve Skolevski Beskidy. It is said to be cursed by local witches – there are no plants or any animals in it, and the water is of an unusual black color. This is the Dead Lake. And the reason for all this is the high level of hydrogen sulfide in the water. But in spite of all this, the lake is one of the favorite places for tourists, because it is surrounded by unusual for the Carpathian area landscapes: mosses, bogs and small rare trees.
