Winter Hoverla and Petros, February 2021
Preparation. I started preparing for the winter ascent in advance. With running and lunges. I bought the necessary gear. Kuluar's manager helped with choosing boots. Kuluar's videos on proper selection of clothing and gear were very helpful, as well as the detailed lists of everything needed for the trek. Meeting the group and the Carpathians. The trek itself began with the participants meeting guide Nikita Kosov at the train station. That same evening we got acquainted with the group over a dinner prepared by the guide. Nikita gave us crampons and poles. He explained and showed everyone how to use them properly. Hoverla greeted us with good sunny weather. Walking wasn't hard. The guide correctly arranged the group by ascent speed. So it was comfortable for everyone to walk. All in all, Hoverla welcomed us with open arms). But Petros the next day closed itself in clouds and actively defended itself with wind. I'm grateful to Nikita for choosing the right route, thanks to which only our group managed to successfully conquer the summit of Petros in such difficult weather. My conclusions. Winter Carpathians are good for beginner climbers. But I'll say right away that this is not an easy trek. The weather decides. You shouldn't treat any mountains carelessly, even ones as low as our Carpathians. I recommend carefully selecting clothing and gear, consulting with Kuluar's managers along the way. They are very responsive and are no less interested in your successful and safe trek than you are yourself. If it's the mountains - then with Kuluar!
