Why donate blood?

A little bit of theory.

As a result of the many injuries on the front lines, there is now an excessive need for blood, but it's a good cause in normal peacetime as well. Your blood can be a lifesaver for people with cardiovascular and hematopoietic diseases, as well as those who suffer from cancer, because it is one of the key steps in effective treatment.

There is always a need for donor blood. It is used in both emergency and planned cases. All you have to do is come to any transfusion center and learn more about it firsthand.
Important: Blood cannot be made from synthetic materials. The only way to ensure the need for blood and its components, such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, is by a living and healthy person who has voluntarily decided to donate blood. And that person may be you.

One can talk a lot about statistics and count the number of lives saved in recent years, but the fact is that blood donors will always be needed. Join the donor movement and save someone's life.

But not everyone can donate blood. Let's get to the bottom of this question.

Who can become a donor?

  • It can be anyone over the age of 18.
  • Weight must be at least 50 kg.
  • Hemoglobin level within normal limits (135-170 g/l in men, 120-140 g/l in women).

And if you probably know your weight, then with hemoglobin you will be advised already in the center. Before you donate your blood they will certainly take a sample, measure your blood pressure (normal values are 90 to 160 mm Hg - upper, 60 to 100 mm Hg - lower), measure your body temperature, your pulse, and either allow you to donate blood, or prohibit you and ask you to come another time.

Preparing to donate blood

It is better to do it in the morning. And almost all centers are open only in the morning - roughly from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Three days before donation stop taking painkillers and aspirin - because they affect blood clotting. Two days before the test, do not drink alcohol, and one hour before the test, abstain from smoking. And it is better not to smoke on that day at all.
Particular attention should be paid to your diet. Try to eat only healthy and balanced food the day before and on the day of blood donation. It is extremely not recommended to eat fatty, spicy, salty, smoked and fried food. It is also forbidden to eat milk, butter, and eggs. All this is because these foods have a large amount of animal proteins and fats, which negatively affect the separation of blood and the quality of its components. The forbidden products can directly affect the quality of the donated blood, and it is likely that it will unfortunately not be usable afterwards. The transfusion center will tell you more about this. But in order to avoid this and still do a good deed - it is better to adhere to the diet and recommendations for preparation.

It is important to have a good and hearty breakfast. A wonderful breakfast on the day of donation can be porridge boiled in water, sweet tea with cookies.
Also, you need to get a good night's sleep. In no case you should not come to the exam after the night shift or not sleeping and tired. If you do not feel well in the morning - it is better to stay at home this time. You will go the next time.

How does the blood donation procedure work?

It's actually not as scary as it seems to many at first glance.

Almost every major city in our country has specialized blood transfusion centers. Find out where exactly in your city there is one, you can call a few days in advance to find out their work schedule and prepare for the donation itself.

Here are some of the largest blood centers:

For a complete list of blood transfusion centers, click here.

Bring a document that proves your identity to the transfusion center. You will be given a card at the reception desk and asked for your information. Then you will be seen by a doctor, who will certainly ask about your well-being, measure your blood pressure and pulse. You will be tested for blood group and hemoglobin. You must only tell the doctor the truth - this affects how you will feel after the test, and whoever receives your blood afterwards.

If all is well, your blood pressure is normal, and you feel well, you will be taken to the donation room. Professional nursing staff will do everything necessary and observe you the whole time. This takes about 10-15 minutes.

The norm of donation is 450 ml.

After the donation you will be offered sweet tea and cookies. It is desirable to sit and rest for 10-20 minutes. And if you feel good, with no dizziness in the head, you can go.

On the day of delivery it is important not to overexert yourself, not to get tired and eat a full meal. Drink enough water, do not exercise, refrain from smoking.

You will receive a gratuity for this procedure - you may take it or refuse it if you wish. You will also be given a certificate-paid sick leave for work/study.

The blood donation procedure itself is beneficial not only for the person who then receives your blood, but also for yourself. Your cardiovascular system is stimulated and your body gradually produces new blood cells.

By becoming a donor, you will do a very good deed, and also - get a bonus for the trip from us. How cool is that?
