Golden Circle of Iceland with Kuluar

The Golden Circle of Iceland is the most popular route of the country not only among tourists but also among locals. This is not surprising, because the Golden Ring is very rich and diverse. It allows you to get acquainted with the main sights and touch the subtle soul of the country of ice and flame most quickly and affordably. Definitely, we put the Golden Circle of Iceland in the category of must see.

General information about the Golden Circle of Iceland

The route is named after the Gudlfoss waterfall (“Golden Falls”), which is one of its main attractions. The length of the Golden Circle is about 300 km. The tour by bus or car takes one day.

Рейкьявик

It all starts on the southwest coast, in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, then the road heads into the center of the island to the favorite tourist spots – Tingvellir Park, Gullfoss (or Gullfoss) waterfall and Höjkadalur geyser valley. These 3 locations are considered the main locations on the route and are visited by tourists on a mandatory basis. But besides them, there are several other places worth seeing in the Golden Circle.

We tour the Golden Circle on a hike through the south of Iceland. This is a very rich program in which the Golden Ring is just the beginning of a great adventure.

Touring the Golden Circle of Iceland with Kuluar – what we’ll see

Let’s briefly describe the sights that await us during a tour of the Golden Circle .

Waterfall Gudlfoss

Gudlfoss is a very beautiful waterfall, one of the country’s calling cards. Rumbling streams rushing off the rocks and scatter a myriad of splashes, which always in sunny weather turn into rainbows of extraordinary beauty (as in my picture below). I can’t say for sure what is more beautiful – the waterfall itself or the rainbows around it. It is very interesting to hear your opinion after you have been there. For such beauty the forefathers of modern Icelanders gave it its name – the Golden Falls.  Powerful river Hvitau with the unique direction of the stream forms two multimeter cascades with a turn of 90 degrees and at the end becomes flying in 70 meters abyss picturesque avalanche.  It’s a breathtaking sight.

Tingvellir Park

There are very few trees and flowers, but there are majestic panoramas, the mirror-like surface of Lake Tingvadlawatn, the stark contours of low mountains in a blue haze, the reliefs of deep cracks in the rocky ground and the sky. A lot of sky. It’s not for nothing that the park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. And Icelanders are proud of the fact that their ancestors convened the world’s first Parliament on this very territory in 930.

As a bonus, a visitor to the lake can secure his or her good fortune and assemble a low pyramid troll from the stones. And so, the northern shore of the lake is now a grandiose garden of stones, or rather a garden of pyramidal trolls.  ☺

Also here is the fault between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. One step and you’re in America, another step and you’re back in Europe, so the Icelanders joke.

Heukadalur Valley of Geysers

The “godfather” of all hot springs of the world – once the Great Geyser (Geysir) – is still active here. Now it has grown old, weakened and gave way to a young and vivacious geyser – Strokkur. It delights the tourists with water column of 15-20 m high with the regularity of every 3-12 minutes. Now it is the first of 40 geysers in the valley. But apart from it there are cosmic landscapes and the dazzling turquoise Lake Blaisy.

Hveragerdi

For those accustomed to big cities, this is a village, but for Iceland, it’s a town. Almost 2,500 people live here.  Nature, or rather the Hengidl volcano, has provided many of them with a place to work. Its heat heats greenhouses and greenhouses for flowers, fruits and vegetables, which fall on the table of the citizens of the country.
The name of the town translates as “garden of hot springs”, because it also has its own geysers and even its own lakes with very hot water.

Kerid Volcano

As a volcano, Kerid is completely harmless. Its highlight is a magnificent dark aquamarine lake in the crater bowl made of volcanic stone of different colors. In some places, the walls of the bowl are canopy and covered with a carpet of Icelandic moss. If you wish, you can go down and wash yourself in the clearest water, and if you are lucky with the weather, take some surprisingly colorful photos.

Skaulholt

It was once the cultural, religious and political center of Iceland: for almost 750 years it was the seat of the bishops of Iceland. Unfortunately, the political squabbles of the authorities led to the decline of the place and it became deserted for a long time. Only since the 60s of the 20th century every summer during the international festival of classical music it comes alive and listens to music within the walls of its new cathedral complex.

The Nesjastvellir geothermal power plant

It heats the entire capital, which is half the population of Iceland. Prices are lower than the European average. They even heat the sidewalks, and don’t spend money on snow removal.  In principle, 90% of homes in Iceland are heated this way.

The tour of the Golden Ring of Iceland is just a small part of what we will see during our hike, the description of which can be found at this link >>. For those who have already seen a lot, we highly recommend to read the description of the trek and take part in it!

There are a lot of things to say about Iceland, but no words can convey even a little bit of its beauty – you have to see it with your own eyes! So give up your doubts and let’s go to Iceland!
