I went on a hike from Kuluar called “The Lakes and Mountain Meadows of Svidovets,” and it was probably one of the most enjoyable hikes I’ve ever been on. The route itself is very beautiful and constantly changes. We walked along the ridge, descended to the lakes, passed through forests, strolled through the mountain meadows, and visited authentic high-mountain cheese dairies, where we were treated to fresh cheese. I’d been to Svidovets before, but this time I felt as if I were seeing these places in a whole new light. I’d especially like to thank our guide, Oleksandr. He’s a very calm person with a wealth of experience. Throughout the entire hike, I never once felt like anyone was rushing me or that I had to run to keep up. On the contrary, I was able to walk at my own pace and enjoy the route. Along the way, he told many interesting stories, shared facts about the area, and answered any questions we had. It was clear that he’s known these mountains and the people who live here for a long time. We were even able to leave our backpacks with some shepherds we knew and take a leisurely walk to the lake, and at the cheese dairies, we were treated to cheese almost everywhere we went. I usually walk a little slower than most groups, so it was a huge plus for me that Oleksandr gave me a walkie-talkie. If I fell a little behind, I could still stay in touch. I could let them know where I was or ask a question if I needed to. Even when the main group was already waiting at a spring or during a rest stop, I felt completely at ease. To be honest, this was my first time experiencing something like this, and I really liked it. I didn’t have to push myself to the limit the whole hike and worry only about not holding anyone back. I just walked at my own pace and took in the scenery. I’d also like to give a special mention to the food. I’ve never eaten so well on a hike before. The menu was very varied; everything was delicious and filling. They brewed fresh coffee, made delicious tea, cooked borscht, served lard, and had many other treats. It was clear that Oleksandr really cared about making sure everyone ate well. He constantly reminded us, called us to the table, and made sure no one went hungry. I also really liked that at Kuluar, you can rent almost all the gear. I rented a one-person tent that weighed about 1.2 kg, and it was very convenient. Although, for those traveling alone, I’d still recommend finding a travel partner and renting a two-person tent—it’s much warmer for two on cold nights. Even the smallest details were thought through. When it rained, we’d stretch a large tarp between the trees so we could sit comfortably by the campfire, drink tea, and stay dry. At every campsite, Oleksandr would immediately explain the best spot to pitch a tent, where to find water, and what to look out for. If anyone needed help, he’d assist without saying a word. The safety briefing was also very clear. I came home very happy and much more relaxed than I had expected. For me, it was one of those rare occasions when I loved absolutely everything. And I know for sure that I’ll go on more hikes with Kuluar.
